Why We Serve

From Shirley Castle to Success: Our Founder's Journey of Giving Back

Growing up in the rural hills of Shirley Castle in Eastern Jamaica, Richard Scott faced challenges like food insecurity and transportation barriers. Despite this, with the support of his mother and the dedicated faculty at Shirley Castle Primary School, he thrived. Richard later moved to the U.S., becoming a successful entrepreneur. To give back to his community, he and his wife, Morgan, founded BMP Momentum as a way of paying forward the opportunities provided by his early childhood education.

Growing up in the rural hills of the Blue Mountains located in Eastern Jamaica, in a small town known as Shirley Castle, Richard Scott was exposed to the incredible beauty and challenges of life at a young age.

It was not uncommon to see a small "Richie" Scott hiking up hills, often barefoot, with a perfectly ironed school uniform (as required for public schools in Jamaica) making his way on the two-mile route to primary school.

Richard was blessed with a mother who worked hard to care for him despite difficult circumstances. Nonetheless, Richard, like many students, experienced symptoms of poverty such as food insecurity and chronic school absenteeism related to transportation barriers.

Despite the odds, the faculty and staff at Shirley Castle Primary school worked to pull together any and all resources for its students. Richard thrived under their guidance, eventually moving to the U.S. and becoming a successful entrepreneur. He attributes much of his success to his early childhood education provided by his school and community.

Co-founders Richard and Morgan Scott established BMP Momentum as a way to pay forward Richard’s success and give back to the community where he was raised.

Despite these efforts, the persistent lack of resources underscores the need for continued external support to ensure that all Jamaican students receive a quality education.
